A Superior Activity

Debate has long been recognized as one of the best high school activities. It provides a number of immediate academic benefits, in addition to some very important long term advantages. Students who participate in debate for a full year or more do not regret the experience. In fact, most students testify that their lives were changed for the better because of it!

What Is Speech and Debate?

Forensics (debate) comes from the Latin word forensis, meaning “in open court” or “public.”  Forensics refers to the process of gathering evidence, preparing a case, and presenting that case in a court of law.  Debate competitors learn the skills of research, logic, and persuasion which enables them to appeal to any audience – even the court of public opinion.

Through speech and debate, students learn to challenge themselves, to seek out answers, and to educate themselves.  But that’s not all.  Additionally, students gain a myriad of advantages. These advantages propel students in the job market, advance them in academics, and set them on a course of success!  Moreover, forensics is pivotal in training future articulate advocates for Christ.

Purpose

The LFA is more than a debate league. It is a worldview-building, leader-training activity! Through competition and teaching, Christian school students are challenged to know what they believe and why. Additionally, students are equipped with the skills of logic and public speaking to articulately defend their beliefs. The goal of the LFA is to equip the next generation of Christians who will represent Christ in every field.

The LFA is more than a debate league – it is an intensive worldview strengthening program designed to challenge high school students to know what they believe and why and to articulately defend their beliefs. Our ultimate goal is to do more than just create competitive students – we hope to create the next generation of Christians who will represent Christ in every field.

Uniqueness

Unlike other sports, debate is unique because it is a dynamic speech, logic and research activity. Forensics teaches students how to reason and communicate, both calmly and persuasively. Additionally, speech and debate capitalizes on the “logic” and “rhetoric” stages of development. Forensics creates a fun environment that motivates students to learn skills that are almost impossible to acquire in any other way.

Advantages Students Gain

Participating in speech and debate benefits students in multiple ways

College Preparation

Surveys indicate that over 98% of debaters attend college. Additionally, evidence shows debaters being self-directed and motivated. This helps ensure success while pursuing higher education.

Better Test Scores

Research shows that students who compete in debate receive higher test scores and better grades than peers who don’t participate in forensics. Students who participate in debate score 25% higher than their peers on reading, writing, and math tests. Debaters also score higher on the SAT and ACT.

Public Speaking Skills

Public speaking is the #1 fear in America, but it is also a skill that is highly sought after by colleges and employers. Speech and debate fosters a love for public speaking and produces success for students in any environment!

Notable Careers

One survey found that of students who debated, 30% became university educators, 15% were top corporate executives and 10% were working in various branches of government. Others entered the clergy, started their own businesses, or became writers and publishers.

Improved Critical Thinking

Debate teaches proper argumentation. Students learn to use logic and to think on their feet. Also, debaters analyze issues and critically evaluate the merit of a proposed action.

Respect for Others

Competing in debate requires students to learn to respectfully disagree with opponents. Students learn how to listen to those who disagree with them. They also have intelligent and respectful dialogues on controversial issues.

Character Development

One study found that high school debate decreased disciplinary problems among participants by 50%. Moreover, debaters focus on this issue rather than ad hominem attacks.

Leadership Qualities

Forensics encourages students to be leaders on their campus and in their personal lives. By setting the example, debaters become natural leaders.

Better Understanding of Civics

Forensic students develop an understanding and a fondness for economics, history, and government studies. All of which are critical to the well-being of society.

Additional Benefits

Good Foundations

Today’s students will soon become witnesses to those they encounter at college or the workplace. While it is crucial that the next generation have a strong Christian worldview, it is also important for them to be able to both communicate and defend this worldview. Debate allows these young adults to hone their communication skills in a friendly, Christian environment.

Classical Education

In the classical education model, dialogue, discussion and debate are identified as the best tools for advancing students through the logic and rhetoric stages of learning. Not only does debate capitalize on these critical stages, but it provides some enormous benefits. Some of these include: research skills, logic and reasoning, critical thinking, improved speaking ability, and persuasion skills.

Leadership Development

Students who participate in debate become natural leaders. They learn to think for themselves and communicate well with others. They also become responsible for their own success and typically go above and beyond what the teacher requires. The LFA facilitates this leadership development and trains students to be representatives of Christ in future generations.
