“I Need Ammunition, Not A Ride!”

“I need ammunition, not a ride!”  Reportedly, this was the response of Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, when urged to flee Kiev in the face of the oncoming Russian army.  There is something in us that appreciates and admires courageous stands such as this – when a leader chooses to do his duty in the face of overwhelming opposition.

During our War for Independence against Great Britain, we have many such examples.  One of my favorites is the story of our first naval hero, John Paul Jones.  Considered, the father of the US Navy, Jones alarmed the British people by sailing off the shores of Ireland.  During this voyage he engaged in battle with a superior force.  His ship was badly damaged and the flag had accidentally fallen – typically a sign of surrender.  When asked by the opposing captain if he was ready to surrender, Jones exclaimed, “I have not yet begun to fight!”  His men turned the tide of battle and gained the victory.

Soon after the Israelites were released from captivity and returned to the Promised Land, Nehemiah was appointed governor.  His task was a great one.  The walls of Jerusalem needed to be rebuilt while the enemies of Israel were threatening from all around.  Against this vast opposition, Nehemiah rallied the people of Israel, “Do not be afraid of them; remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives and your houses.” (Nehemiah 4:14)  By God’s blessing of Nehemiah’s faithfulness to his post as governor, the schemes of their enemies were thwarted.

What is it about these stories that causes such admiration from those observing?  God has placed in each of our hearts a desire to see justice carried out.  In our sinful world, the Lord has ordained the civil government to be his minister of justice against those that do evil.  That is government’s one task.  When we see those in civil authority taking great personal risks – even risking their own lives – to fulfill that ministry, it inspires respect.  Thus, we come to admire men like John Paul Jones, Nehemiah, and Volodymyr Zelensky because they execute God’s justice on this earth.

Zelensky and the people of Ukraine are facing a superior foe.  An enemy bent on subduing them and stealing their land.  We can and should admire the bold resistance offered by the Ukrainians.  We are encouraged to see their president fulfilling his God-given duty to protect the rights of his people.

Please join me in praying for the people of Ukraine.  Their cause is just against a wicked aggressor.  They do need ammunition.  Praise the Lord that He has roused some European countries to help meet that need!  Pray also for our civil leaders that they would concern themselves with their only task: to protect our God-given rights.  Remind them when they don’t.  Keep them accountable.

May our president down to our city council members take note of the lessons from Ukraine.
