Talking Across the Divides: How to have a Civil Conversation in an Uncivil World

Sociologists and others who study human behavior and relationships have found that civility is quickly disappearing from our society. What gives someone the right to treat another person with disrespect, to be rude, harsh and even cruel. Is it political affiliation, race, national origin, color, gender, reputation?

Civility is essential for stable, strong and harmonious communities. When citizens show concern for each other, not only do their relationships become stronger, society as a whole functions better.

Mike Winther, President of the Institute for Principle Studies, will share some of what he has gleaned from his experience in the political campaign realm as well as the academic and debate communities about having ongoing dialogue with those you strongly disagree with. In other words, he will help us grow in our abilities to talk across the divides.

*The speaking portion of the video begins around the 28 minute mark.
