In Memory of Marshall Foster

Brian EschenBlog

We are sad to announce that on July 22, 2022, Dr. Marshall Foster, a dear friend of the Winthers and a member of the IPS Scholars Council, passed away. But we are comforted knowing he is in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

My first introduction to Marshall Foster was in the late 90’s when I attended a conference where he was speaking.  Unlike anyone else I have ever met, Marshall had a way of bringing the listener into the story of God’s plan of redemption.  In broad historical brush strokes, he would help you see your role as part of God’s “army of compassion,” knowing that Christ by the power of His gospel must win.  You couldn’t help but go away reinvigorated to share the love of Jesus.

Mike Winther would often tell the story of bumping into Marshall on a history tour in Washington D.C.  While Mike was leading one tour, Marshall was leading another – along the same route!  For a change of pace, they decided to switch busses, each teaching the other’s bus.  Both Mike and Marshall were kindred spirits in their eternal optimism rooted in the sure victory of the Lord they served.  Thus, for Marshall, the telling of history was an illustration that God’s plans will not be frustrated. God’s gospel will succeed.  That was what Dr. Foster was committed to passing down to the next generation of Christians.

Through the years, Marshall kept in touch with our ministry – from an IPS launch event at the beginning of this ministry, to a Reformation fair where Marshall and Mike shared the teaching platform, to most recently when Marshall encouraged Christian school teachers by recounting how education has transformed nations.

His joy was contagious, his love evident, and his storytelling unmatched.  We will miss this dear brother and fellow warrior in the faith.
